Very few people join because you offer coffee.

Michael Henderson
It is why you do it that is important.

Simon Sinek often says, “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” His point here is that what we do is often very similar to what another person does. Whether it be a cafe, a church, or a clothing shop. Very few people join because you offer coffee. They join because of why we do it. What motivates us? Why we exist?

I want to extend this phrase of Sinek, you could say this, “People don’t attend church because of what we do, they attend church (or don’t attend) because of why we do it.” Churches, at least to people who know little about them, look to do very similar things. Whether it be music, sermons, or youth groups. Very few people join just because we run a youth group. They join because of why we do it. The quick and general answer here is because of Jesus. But dig deeper. What motivates us about Jesus? Why run a youth group, and how would you speak about Jesus in that space?

Sinek’s point is the more specific we can be about why, the clearer we will be about what we do and how we will do it.

Asking why questions, exposes our deep reasons for why we do things. Answering why questions, honestly, can solve why people want to join in, and perhaps why they do not.
