I can struggle to make a decision. So many things can hold me back. I get bogged down with weighing up options and doing research and asking others what they think. I am a master at “kicking the can down the road.” Sometimes, I can become so overwhelmed that I start to think, “the rest of my life depends on this one decision.” All of this leaves me thinking, “how does anyone do this?”

Thinking Buddies

One of my biggest learnings from 2024 is how much I need other people to help me think through my leadership challenges. These people - I call them my “Thinking Buddies” - become especially crucial when emotions run high, and the path forward seems difficult and complicated.

Slow Down

Just as in personal relationships, it's crucial to take time to understand each other's goals, passions, and trustworthiness. Both Core and Edge Leaders need to assess their compatibility carefully, ensuring that they share a common vision and can build mutual trust. Rushing into a formal commitment without fully exploring these aspects can lead to imbalances in risk, discipline, and commitment. A deliberate "dating" period helps both leaders establish a strong foundation for a long-lasting and fruitful collaboration.

When two leaders decide they want to work together, the initial stages are a lot like dating.
