Courage’s home is inside us

Michael Henderson
Courage’s home is inside us. It is the quality of being present in our world, of showing up, of being brave and vulnerable. It does not come at the end. It is not the result of a successful outcome. The reason it is difficult is that it is needed at the beginning. Courage fills us with the strength to go, to stay present, to stand our ground in the midst of a storm when forces come against us and try to make us stop.

For followers of Jesus, courage is entered into through surrender. It is our willingness to let go of everything we cling to and trust that God’s heart is always for us. Even in the middle of a storm. Especially when we take the risk without knowing the outcome. Then, having entered into it, God has a way of amplifying that step of surrender that it creates a life of its own, a quiet strength beyond anything we could have imagined.

It is Jesus empowering us that gives us the ability to hold bravery and vulnerability. This is courage.
